From sport to street : THEY are the shoes worn by athletes as they race to the finish line, by anyone having a kick-around in the park or by groups of kids eager to show off the latest must-haves. Now a new exhibition at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery follows the trainer from its inception in the mid-19th century as a sports shoe very different to what we know now, to the high performance footwear worn by sports stars and the sneakers riding high on a crest of fashion. Sport to Street is the culmination of a three-year project which saw the museum benefit from a £146,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant, which they used to buy trainers and sports shoes for the exhibition.
